Contents: This is report #12 in a series of Trading Systems that Gerald Appel (Inventor of MACD), published to subscribers of his service in the early and mid 1980s. (from the introduction)."In This report we shall deal with an alternative approach to moving averages, an approach that employs first and second derivatives of the moving averages, in this case the rates of change of the moving averages. Since moving averages reflect the trends of the periods of their time span, rates of change of the moving averages reflect changes that are taking place in the velocity of these trends. Theoretically, you take long positions when the velocity of a downtrend starts to form negative (strong down) to positive (less negative) and you sell or take short positions when the velocity of trend turns from positive (rising) to negative (falling). In so doing, as we shall see in this report, you will be entering and exiting the market much earlier than when you employ moving average crossing systems. The reliability of such trading systems can be quite high, particularly when shorter term systems are properly filtered." Includes charts, tables and the results of 13 years of back-testing. VERY SCARCE title, 16 pages, Collectible.
