Conclusions -- end. 23 pp. (plus Wesley C. Mitchell's 3 pp. article)

Summary: This is one of the most important articles ever written on long cycles.

About the Author: Nikolai Dimitrievich Kondratiev was born on 4 March 1892 in the province of Kostroma, north of Moscow, into a peasant family. He was tutored at the University of St. Petersburg before the 1917 Russian Revolution by Mikhail Tugan-Baranovsky. A member of the Socialist-Revolutionary Party, his initial professional work was in the area of agricultural economics and statistics and the problem of food supplies.

On 5 October 1917, at the age of 25, he was appointed Minister of Supply of the last Alexander Kerensky government, which lasted for only a few days. After the revolution, he dedicated his attention to academic research. In 1919, he was appointed to a teaching post at the Agricultural Academy of Peter the Great, and in October 1920 he founded the Institute of Conjuncture, in Moscow.

As its first director, he developed the institute, from just a couple of scientists, into a large and respected institution with 51 researchers by 1923. In 1923, Kondratiev intervened in the debate about the "Scissors Crisis", following the general opinion of his colleagues. In 1923-25, he worked on a five-year plan for the development of Soviet agriculture. In 1924, after publishing his first book, presenting the first tentative version of his theory of major cycles, Kondratiev travelled to England, Germany, Canada and the United States, and visited several universities before returning to Russia.

A proponent of the Soviet New Economic Policy (NEP), Kondratiev favored the strategic option for the primacy of agriculture and the industrial production of consumer goods, over the development of heavy industry. Kondratiev's influence on economic policy lasted until 1925, declined in 1926 and ended by 1927. Around this time, the NEP was dissolved by a political shift in the leadership of the Communist Party. Kondratiev was removed from the directorship of the Institute of Conjuncture in 1928 and arrested in July 1930, accused of being a member of a "Peasants Labour Party" (allegedly a non-existent party invented by the NKVD).

Convicted as a "kulak-professor" and sentenced to 8 years in prison, Kondratiev served his sentence, from February 1932 onwards, at Suzdal, near Moscow. Although his health deteriorated under poor conditions, Kondratiev continued his research and decided to prepare five new books, as he mentioned in a letter to his wife. Some of these texts were indeed completed and were published. His last letter was sent to his daughter, Elena Kondratieva, on 31 August 1938.

Shortly afterwards, on 17 September during the Great Purge, he was subjected to a second trial, condemned to ten years without the right to correspond with the outside world. However, Kondratiev was executed by firing squad on the same day the sentence was issued. Kondratiev was 46 at the time of his execution. He was rehabilitated almost fifty years later, on 16 July 1987. His collected works were first translated into English by Stephen S. Wilson in 1998. - Recommended Reading.

(Note: this is NOT the same as "The Long Wave Cycle" that was co-written by Kondratiev and D.I. Oparin with an Introduction by Julian M. Synder).

The Crime of Deflation, V. Hedging - The Cause of More Grief, VI. Manipulation - Fleecing the Farmer and Public, VII. Gambling, VIII. Gossip, IX. False Teaching, X. Legislative Activity of the Chicago Board of Trade and Other Exchanges, XI. Stable and Unstable, XII. How Exchange Gambling and Lobbying Affects the Farm Home -- end. 101 pp.,

About the Author: GOUGH, LYSIUS (1862-1940). Lysius Gough, farmer, businessman, and author, one of ten children of Asher and Elizabeth Gough, was born in Lamar County, Texas, on July 29, 1862. His father, a minister in the First Christian Church, owned a 160-acre farm on which Gough developed an early interest in cattle raising.

In 1876, at the age of fourteen, he ran away from home and got his first job as a cowboy for B. L. Murphy, who ran cattle in Hopkins and Hunt counties. During the next five years Gough participated in several overland drives to Kansas. In 1882 Jule Gunter hired him to work for the T Anchor Ranch. Because he never swore, Gough's fellow cowhands gave him the nickname "Parson." He remained with the T Anchor until 1884, when he decided to complete his education.

He entered Pilot Point Institute, finished high school at the age of twenty-six, obtained a teaching certificate, and was hired to be principal of the institute. While he was there, Gough published his first collection of cowboy verse, Western Travels and Other Rhymes (1886). He also studied law and qualified for the legal profession. In 1888 he married Ida Russell, a former pupil of his at Pilot Point, and they settled on a farm south of Dimmitt. They had ten children, six of whom lived to adulthood.

In 1891 Gough taught the county's first school in Dimmitt. Later that year he assisted in the organization of the county and was elected the first county judge. In October 1898 the Goughs moved to Hereford, where he engaged in the real estate business and was for a time in partnership with C. G. Witherspoon.

In 1910 Gough was involved with D. L. McDonald in the drilling of irrigation test wells and was among the first to drill his own irrigation well. In 1911 he entered into a contract with the C. B. Livestock Company of Crosby County and conducted experimental work on 10,000 acres to determine what crops and seed types would be most profitable in the county. His detailed weekly reports are in the archives of the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum. After 1914 Gough began large-scale farming for himself. He was president of the Texas Wheat Growers Association from 1923 until 1928.

In 1929 he published a book entitled Crime, in which he denounced the activities of speculators in the Grain Exchange and their effects on prices paid to farmers. He began lecturing on farm subjects and was known throughout the Great Depression as a champion of farmers' rights. Summary: EXTREMELY SCARCE AND IMPORTANT DEPRESSION ERA TITLE on the Grain Trade and what the author views as the dangers brought forth by excessive speculation and shady Board of Exchange practices. HIGHLY COLLECTIBLE.

Book Condition: Very Good, wrappers rubbed and soiled, general shelfwear, corners bumped, internally very clean and unmarked.

Contents: This book contains selected portions of the original 1688 version that were directly related to the Seventeenth Century Stock Exchange in Amsterdam. These accounts by de la Vega are widely regarded as the first written observations and descriptions of how the Stock Exchange operates. Trade and speculation in shares first appeared in Amsterdam when, in 1602, the six local "chambers" for East Indian trade were united into a general Dutch East India Company. This is a fascinating read on it's own, but I found the lengthy Introduction invaluable. This "Introduction" is not found in other versions of this book.Contains a two page Forward by Aurthor H. Cole, Research Center in Entrepreneurial History, Harvard University, and a fourteen page Introduction by the principle translator Hermann Kellenbenz. Professional traders will find the similarities of the Seventeenth Century Exchange far outweigh the differences of today's modern exchanges. The Introduction also includes some important historical content that provides a good backdrop for the de la Vega dialogues. 56 pages. A MUST READ for any serious trader. 1988 REPRINT of the 1957 translation of this 1688 title, Collectible.

Status: SOLD, 11 September, 2012 to Private Collector in New York.
