The recurrent phases of economic activity-- prosperity, crisis, depression, and revival -- grow into and out of each other. They are here examined in terms of the characteristics and observed behavior of the economic system. Originally published in 1912, Mitchell's germination and familiar work marked the beginning of a distinctly new approach to the analysis of business cycles. This volume, which is Part III of the larger work, has since become the classic theory of their causes. One of the reasons for its durability is not far to seek: it was woven out of observed phenomena of the money economy, not spun out of airy postulates. Original contributions to economic theory outlast the individual and temporal variations which the annals of business and the tables of statistics show. This is such a contribution. Wesley Clair Mitchell was for many years Professor of Economics at Columbia University and Director of the National Bureau of Economic Research, Inc.] 226 Pages, Indexed. Collectible.

The Great Conspiracy of The House of Morgan Exposed and How to Defeat it by H.L. Loucks

The Great Conspiracy of The House of Morgan Exposed and How to Defeat it

by H.L. Loucks

Book Description: H.L. Loucks, Watertown, South Dakota, 1916. Soft cover. 2nd Edition. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Softcover, (missing cover), Second Edition, 1916.

Book Condition: Fair, missing front cover, does have back cover, corners bumped, some soiling to pages and age tanning throughout, spine cover missing, will need to be re-bound.

Subjects Covered: Preface, Agriculture, Money and it's Functions, Dangerous Money, Morgan Crowned Sovereign, The House of Morgan Secures Monopoly of Money, Rural Credit, The Gold Dollar, The Federal Reserve Act, The World's Banker, State Banks, 196 Pages, Indexed.

Background Notes on the Author: Henry Langford Loucks was born at Hull, Ontario, Canada, May 24, 1846 to William J. and Anna (York) Loucks. He was educated in the Canadian common schools. He married Florence Isabel McCraney at Oakville, Ontario, Canada, May 22, 1878. They had seven children, four of whom grew to maturity: Perry, Anna, Elizabeth, and Daniel. Loucks came to the United States and conducted a mercantile business in Michigan and later in Missouri. In 1884, he settled on a government homestead in Deuel County, Dakota Territory, near Clear Lake (S.D.). His settlement came as the great boom was subsiding. He experienced almost at once the hardships which were common to the farmers of the region and he took up their cause by organizing a "farmer's club" which soon became the Territorial Alliance. In 1885, this group affiliated with the National Farmer's Alliance. Loucks became the leader and president of the Territorial Alliance and assisted in organizing a number of cooperative business ventures, including fire and hail insurance and merchandising. He also established the Dakota Ruralist as the exponent of his economic views and published it for nearly twenty years. At first, he and his associates, who generally affiliated with the Republican Party, hoped to accomplish their objectives through the existing parties. But in 1890, at a joint convention of the Knights of Labor and the state Farmers' Alliance, of which he was then president, Loucks was named as candidate for governor. He was defeated, but succeeded in consolidating a large section of the farmers into a separate political party in 1891, at first known as the Independent, later identified with the People's of Populist Party. In 1892, he presided over the first Populist Party national convention. In the same year he was elected president of the National Farmers' Alliance and Industrial Union. He fought for the adoption of the initiative and referendum in South Dakota in 1898 and its success was conceded to have resulted from his efforts. Loucks published several works, the titles of which indicate the direction of this thought. Some of the titles include: The New Monetary System (1893); Government Ownership of Railroad and Telegraphs (1894); and the Great Conspiracy of the House of Morgan and How to Defeat It (1916).While his home for many years was Watertown, South Dakota, his death occurred at Clear Lake, South Dakota, December 29, 1928. Contents:
FICTION - A wonderful story by Leonard Wibberley about The Duchy of Grand Fenwick's fiscal challenges when faced with a financial windfall and it's citizenry experience what can happen when one doesn't understand the dangers of "too much of a good thing." After trying to dump their next windfall in the stock market to lose it, they find that wall street doesn't always deliver on expectations. The Duchy of Grand Fenwick is a tiny fictional country about 3 by 5 miles long. The Duchy, ruled by Duchess Gloriana XII, is described as bordering Switzerland and France in the Alps. Wibberley's first novel in the "Mouse" series "The Mouse that Roared." received critical acclaim and was made into a film starring Peter Sellers, Jean Seberg and Leo McKern in 1959. Another Mouse novel "The Mouse on the Moon" was also made into a film in 1963.

This novel is recommended reading for anyone interested in monetary policy, the dangers of a trade imbalance or the risks of inflation and devaluation of a fiat currency. Although this story centers around sovereign finances, I found it very enlightening on how one may want to treat their own individual financial empire. Fiscal prudence, thrift and foresight will always win the test of time. The biggest takeaway I got from this book was the importance of balance, specifically trade balance. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED READING, should be mandatory reading for every US politician. Collectible.
